My take after 2nd viewing of game
Offense
Clark - He had some good moments and some bad moments. Hard to argue with 70% completion, 350, 3 tds. But did make a few stupid throws. Maybe due to new o-line and him not feeling comfortable yet.
Royster - Nothing special for him. Stupid to be on punt return. What a waste and risk.
Green - Not good. Danced way too much and missed a few holes. Made run blocking look worse than it was....even though it still wasn't good. Took too long to hit the hole.
Quarless/Shuler - Started out good...then average. Quarless got banged up so i guess they stayed away from him rest of the game.
Receiversl - Wow. Nobody would have expected them to perform like that today. It was like we just replaced 3 solid guys with 3 solid guys. Solid blocking, catching the ball, etc... I love Moye's size and ability to go up to get it. Wish we got more looks with Drake. Even liked seeing Smith get in there. He looked comfortable for his first game.
O-line - Very solid with pass blocking.....marginal at best with run blocking. I expected it to be the other way around. It wasn't as bad as I first though when I watched the 2nd time... but they definitely had some trouble with the extra men Akron brought up. But that's ok....gave them something to see on film and learn from. better to face things like that now than game 8.
D-line - Monsters. No matter who is out there they perform every year. Crawford will be a beast soon enough. Odrick already is. Hayes had flashes but looked still slightly hesitant. (understandable) Ogbu was a beast as well.
LBs - I think it's safe to say Sean Lee has lost nothing. That play where he sniffed out the HB on 3rd down to not allow the pass was brilliant. No way Hull or Sales makes that play. Stupar did a very good job coming in for Bowman. Hull....boy oh boy. He makes 1 nice play... but then looks lost on the next play. Freakin Mauti....how amazing this group would be with him.
Secondary - Actually saw some bump coverage with Timmons. Lynn looked good to me. Obviously not tested much and did get beat deep (Sukay missed that one I believe).....but I think they did okay in what they had to do. Astorino reminds me of a pre-apartment beatdown Scirotto. But not much overall passing to give full assessment. I think they will be okay...at least for our regular season schedule.
Special teams - Dare I say everyone on this board is going to miss Kevin Kelly and his automatic within 40???????? Not much happening on punt return but with the way Akron sent guys out there, it was hard to set up a return. Love seeing Smith out there on kickoffs.
Coaching - Pretty decent gameplan on O. 12 different guys caught the ball I think today. Good sign. Like to see more bootlegs with Clark....very effective. Gotta work on the screens to green though. It seems like he has to slow down too much and guys can catch him from behind. Maybe run a bubble screen with him or something.
Overall - Wish we made the FG in the 1st and scored on that INT by clark. 41-7 looks much better. But they got some positives out of it with the receivers and working on the passing game. I fully expect the run game to be there soon but it's nice to see that the passing game can be as well. If the secondary comes together....this D can be scary good. Front 7, barring injury is huge.
